Tips For Building A Beautiful Koi Pond

Choosing Koi Pond Plants
A garden pond can be a lot of fun and if you have Koi fish this adds an interesting element. However, your pond can be a little sparse with just the fish so you might consider adding some Koi pond plants for a bit of interest.

Plants not only look great but they also provide your fish with a natural environment and as well as place to hide. The plants help support biological life in the pond and give it more of what nature intended. When you choose plants, you want to be sure to pick only those that can survive in your climate, there is no sense in buying a plant that will die off because it is not getting the sun or temperature it needs. Check with your local garden supply store to find out which pond plants work best in your area.

Here are some Koi pond plants you might consider for your pond:

Water Hyacinths

Water Hyacinths grow right in the water - no planting needed. They sit on the water and send their roots down getting their nutrients from the pond. They are pretty plants, but will also help keep down the algae and weeds in your pond. The only problem is that they can be invasive and you will have to keep a close eye on them - removing some when they become too crowded.

Lotus

Lotus plants go great in a Koi pond as they have an Asian air to them. Their lovely blooms and fragrant scent will add to any water garden but they do like it warm so if you are in a climate that has winter, they will die off when the temperatures dip below 65, or you will have to move them inside for the winter. These plants like moist soil and a lot of sun.

There are also some plants you can buy that aren’t for decoration but are more for keeping your pond in balance. Some plants help to add oxygen to the water as well as help you battle the algae that is constantly threatening your pond.

You can get Koi pond plants at your local garden center - they will be able to advise you as to which types of plants will be best for your pond.
